The Town Board will hold a Public Hearing on Thursday, February 13 regarding Proposed Local Law 1 of 2025 “Providing Real Property Tax Exemptions for Volunteer Firefighters and Ambulance Workers Pursuant to Section 466-A of the Real Property Tax Law”.
A Note from Supervisor Knott: In 2023 the State authorized local municipalities to adopt a local law granting volunteer firefighters a property tax reduction to help reward our volunteers and possibly increase volunteer enrollment. Stuyvesant did adopt this law along with most all other taxing entities in the county. This year the state authorized what I consider a correction to original law, and now the town and county have scheduled public hearings to adopt modifications to that law that would now allow firefighters to apply for the exemption if they belong to a Fire Department which provides service to a neighboring, City, Village, Town or County. The original law restricted this members who served in an organization that served where they resided, unless they had 20 years in as volunteer.
