There will be a public Community Information Presentation by representatives of the New York State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) on Thursday January 29 at 7 PM at the Stuyvesant Town Hall about listing the proposed Stuyvesant Landing Historic District on the State and National Registers of Historic Places. The community will learn about the history of the National Historic Preservation Act and the National Register of Historic Places and what exactly a listing thereon means. We will also learn about the history of the district and why it is important to recognize the significance of the 70 properties — dating from the mid-eighteenth century through the mid-twentieth century — that comprise the district. We will also learn about the Historic Homeowner Tax Credit program. A Q&A session will follow the presentation and refreshments will be provided.
This presentation is a milestone in a process that began in the fall of 2022 when a group of Landing homeowners met with local historical consultants to discuss whether the Landing’s remarkable collection of intact 18th and 19th century homes qualified as a National Register Historic District. Out of that meeting, a core group of volunteers prepared an Application for Determination of Eligibility that they filed with SHPO in January 2023. In May 2023, SHPO determined that the Landing is eligible to be listed and invited the committee to submit a formal application. The committee surveyed the homeowners within the proposed district and found strong support for the effort.
Realizing that preparing a successful application for a National Register Listing would require the backing of local government and the assistance of a professional architectural historian, the volunteers turned to the Town Board and Town Historian for the needed institutional and financial support, and in October 2023 the Board enthusiastically assumed sponsorship of the proposed district. The Board appointed the volunteer committee members to the Stuyvesant Landing Historic District Subcommittee, charged with coordinating the nomination process with a consulting architectural historian. The consultant’s professional fees were funded by a grant from the Preserve New York Grant Program. Working with the consultant, committee members contributed considerable time and effort towards completing the application.
